Vitamins and amino acids should not be synthetic, and organic should mean that all of the ingredients are organic, including vitamins and minerals, and not just a few. A well-balanced dog food should use real meat as its first ingredient. It should also not use harmful preservatives, flavors or artificial colors. A high-quality dog food for your German Shepherd should have the following:
• Healthy ingredients
• Fresh meat
• Vegetables and fruit
• No controversial ingredients
• No added hormones and steroids
• No unnamed meat sources
• Right ratio of macronutrients
• By-products in dog food are fine when they are organ meats
• Dog food should not be overly processed

When it comes to dog foods, understanding your pet’s current health and nutritional needs is paramount. And always remember to ask your veterinarian for advice before changing your dog’s diet.

The dog food formula should indicate what life stage it is intended for.
AAFCO provides nutrient profiles for all different life stages, all but for one, the senior geriatric dog.
All dog food formulas must meet the AAFCO profiles for all life stages, and must meet the minimum nutrient levels for growth and adult maintenance in dogs.
The dog food formula must be made by a reputable and knowledgeable dog food company that has the highest quality control measures.
Dog food should not be made in China, nor should any of the ingredients originate from China.
Puppies should only eat a puppy food formula, and should always be fed a puppy formula.
Large breed pups like the Great Dane or German Shepherd need to be on a large breed puppy diet to ensure correct growth, and no growth abnormalities.Formulas should contain antioxidants, Omega 3’s, healthy ingredients and a balanced diet for the appropriate life stage.

Dry eye can cause eye damage and vision loss in your German Shepherd if not treated promptly. Immune-mediated diseases can cause dry eye in dogs. Also known as Keratoconjunctivitis, dry eye in dogs is the result of inadequate tear production. You may see lots of mucus and a pus-filled conjunctivitis. There may also be slow- healing sores and scarring on your dog’s cornea. Your veterinarian will most likely prescribe artificial tear solutions or eye ointments. If your German Shepherd has no corneal scarring, your veterinarian may also prescribe meds with steroids. Surgery may also be recommended.
Here’s what to look out for:
.First stage of dry eye which includes ocular discharge with mucus and pus. Eyelids may twitch. Eyes may look very red due to an increase in blood flow to the eye vessels.
.Second Stage will include thick mucoid eye discharge together with a cloudy cornea.
.Third Stage will include pigmentation and corneal ulceration and possible blindness.
Keep in mind that a quick diagnosis from your veterinarian followed by treatment is very important.

German Shepherds need plenty of consistent exercise, and also need to participate in dog sports, and positive dog training classes. By incorporating positive dog training classes into your German Shepherd’s schedule, you’ll both be able to enjoy fun dog training classes, where your dog gets to meet other dogs and people. This helps with socialization. With this process, you’ll need to be dedicated and determined, as with anything that you first try out. Positive dog training should continue throughout a dog’s life. This results with your dog being more relaxed and more obedient when out and about. These classes can be combined with virtual dog training classes. Victoria Stilwell has some tips about what to do if your dog jumps up on you.
“Most dogs jump on people through sheer excitement and because it is an effective means of getting attention,” says Victoria. “But some jump because they feel uneasy when someone new comes into the home, and jumping is an effective way to cope with that discomfort. The best way to stop your dog from jumping up is to ignore her while she’s doing it.”
Stilwell suggests the following five training steps:
1. Each time your dog jumps up at you, turn your back.
2. Do not look at, talk to, or touch your dog at any time. Fold your arms in front of you so that you become boring.
3. When he stops jumping, wait for three seconds of four paws on the floor, then reward the self-control with your attention.
4. If he jumps again, repeat the exercise.
5. Practice this with friends and family members for consistency.
Of your German Shepherd does not behave around guests when they come to visit, Stilwell suggests ” The key to a dog that behaves well with guests is to plan ahead, she adds. “Work well in advance on your dog’s greeting behavior, and get him used to seeing new people in the house.”

My German Shepherd is scared of loud noises what can I do

I only write content within the comments section.Today, anxiousness in dogs is a side effect of the way we live our lives. PetMD gives great tips on how to de-stress your dog. As super busy dog parents,we are constantly stressed, and our dogs may feel that anxiety as well. German Shepherds do well with pressure wraps, which is similar to swaddling a baby. Thundershirt’s let off a gentle, yet constant pressure on your dog. Endorphins or oxytocin are then released in your dog’s brain, causing a relaxed effect. Dog behavior experts found that the Thundershirt also reduces the heart rate of stressed out- dogs.According to a research paper from Science Direct, dogs that suffered from anxiousness, also had premature signs of muzzle graying. “Premature graying in young dogs may be a possible indicator of anxiety, fear or impulsivity issues in dogs under four years of age.” via Science Direct
The research describes the following: “Anxiety is defined as a reaction to a prospective or imagined danger and includes physiological and behavioral signs (p. 1081, Sherman and Mills, 2008). Symptoms may include restlessness, stress whining, barking, closeness in proximity to an owner, and avoidance to name a few (Rooney et al., 2007, Sherman and Mills, 2008). Shedding hair coats in dogs (Klein, 2012) and hair loss in humans can also be related to anxiety and emotional distress” (Sinclair, 1999, Trueb, 2008).via Science Direct
“Impulsivity is defined as a trait related to inhibitory control and is expressed in a range of behaviors (p.676, Wright et al., 2012). In humans, anxiety is associated with impulsivity (Taylor et al., 2008). In dogs, a loss of concentration with difficulty to focus, challenges to maintain a stay position, endless barking, and hyperactivity are some of the indicators for impulsivity (Lit et al., 2010).
The study concluded that ” One practical implication of the findings of this study involves the possibility of using observations of muzzle grayness (assessed in dogs without white, cream, gray or merle-colored muzzles) in a diagnostic manner to address anxiety, impulsivity, or fear issues. Young dogs with owner-reported anxiety and impulsivity issues showed significant values related to premature graying in the muzzle line. There is a need for future research studies to develop behavioral interventions for dogs with anxiety and impulsivity problems.
That said, it’s important for dog parents to remain calm and focused on their dogs, when their dogs are anxious. Human anxiety can also affect dogs in the home. Being zen with your pooch at all times is important!
“The sustained calming and anti-anxiety effect of the right kind of hug is the principle underlying various pressure vests now sold commercially. One is the Anxiety Wrap, and another the Thundershirt, both used to reduce anxiety in dogs.In one study of the Anxiety Wrap that we published, the device produced a 50 percent reduction in signs of thunderstorm phobia in dogs. There was no control for this study, so part of the benefit could have been attributable to the placebo effect, which is alive and well in veterinary medicine. It’s not that the dog expects to feel better and so does feel better when a certain treatment is applied, it’s that the owner can be biased by an enthusiastic prescriber of any treatment being administered.Even if hugging is pleasurable to most dogs under the right circumstances, whether applied directly by a person or indirectly by a pressure vest, that certainly isn’t always the case, so cautions must apply. Here are a few products that work well for canine stress, ” explains Dr. Dodman,DVM, Tufts University.

.Canine Prozac with a veterinary prescription
.Use of tricyclic antidepressants prescribed by your veterinarian
Symptoms of Canine Stress
.Destruction of things around the home
.Seeking comfort from you by huddling up to you
There are also numerous homeopathic and nutritional calming supplements that work well. That said, always consult with a holistic veterinarian for the correct dosage and advice. Maintaining a regular exercise schedule with your furry best friend also helps with canine anxiety. Sometimes destructive behaviors are a sign of boredom. If your dog suffers from panic attacks, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian right away.Loud noises may trigger off a panic attack, but even after the noise ends, your dog may still be anxious.
Never punish your dog if he becomes destructive and hyperactive, while being anxious. Dog behaviorists together with a veterinarian will first diagnose the problem, and see if it’s due to being anxious. Dogs suffering from anxiousness need to be treated for this condition to avoid long term mental stress issues.

How Do I Keep My Dog Fit and Healthy?
.Control your dog’s calorie intake
.Maintain healthy weight management throughout your dog’s life
.Maintain a strict exercise schedule with your pooch
.Consult with your veterinarian regularly if your dog is overweight or obese to maintain a balanced lifestyle with the correct activity level, and weight management dog food formula
.Do not overfeed your dog
.Participate in dog sports like agility or canine surfing
.Live a healthy and active lifestyle with your dog
.Feed a high-quality dog food through out your dog’s life
.Change dog food formulas throughout your dog’s life to match their changing lifestyles
.Opt for reduced fat formulas
Weight management dog food formulas are designed for less active, overweight or obese dogs. So if your dog is a senior dog, opt for formulas that are high-protein like salmon, turkey, dried blueberries and sweet potato or lentil formulas. Small dog breeds should not be overfed. A few extra pounds can seriously affect a small dog’s joints, and may result in heart disease and arthritis. Small dog breed formulas are made specifically with a specific amount of protein and fat to support the high-energy levels of small dog breeds. Feeding smaller meals a few times a day helps with healthy weight management. Grain-free options work well for dogs that are not obese, but are slightly overweight. Look for chicken, duck, venison, turkey, buffalo and beef options which keep larger dog breeds feeling full, all the while limiting weight gain. L-carnitine is a beneficial ingredient that is added to dog food formulas, and transports fatty acids that are essential for cell production for energy. Dogs need taurine as well, since this peps up the amino acids. If you have numerous dogs, opt for pet feeders to keep your dogs on track with weight management. That said, healthy weight management in dogs will allow for them to live longer, and be free from the many diseases linked to obesity.
