What You Need To Know About Yorkies And Their Fur

  1. Shineann had a hair cut when she reach the one year. The groomer recommend the cut. but since about three month after she has started to loss hair from the head area. i decided to take her to dr. Wednesday.

    • We trimmed our Zuzi’s hair when she was three and a half months. There is a baby fur which must be removed at that age so the real hair can come up freely.
Since that time we keep her hair medium long. This is the best decision in my opinion as the really long trim is too difficult to take care of.
On the other hand cutting too short makes her look kind of sick as she weights only 4.4 pounds. Also, the hair protects from the hot weather and during the winter when it is too cold.

These little furbabies are incredible. It’s also easy to take them to a professional groomer where you can opt for a clip. This makes it super easy for daily grooming, and to avoid matting. That said, make sure that all the tools used are high-quality, and that they have a high safety record.”Sanitary” trims are great for pups.Smaller, Teacup Yorkies do not do well with really short trims. As you mentioned, they do look “sick” because they are so small. If you’re opting for longer hair, make sure that daily grooming is a priority. With so many wonderful grooming tools and products on the market today, like grooming gloves and the Activet, brushing time has been reduced. Also look out for holistic shampoos and creme rinses. There are also numerous freshening and shining spritzes that will refresh, deoderize and detangle all together. Hope this helps!

  2. Our 2.5 year old yorkie female (spayed) began experiencing two kinds of hair loss about 6 months ago. One was a general thinning, which melatonin seems to have alleviated. We had a long cold winter and she liked to lay on the heater vent, which we believe may have stimulated the loss.

The other is a spot about the size of a silver dollar that balds completely. It has been scraped twice, both negative. Blood tests were normal. We first tried an antimicrobial ointment that had no effect. We then did 2 rounds of a 10 day antibiotic and a tapered steroid. We saw some improvement both times but relapse was immediate. We have not done a 30 day antibiotic to see if there was a resistant infection and a longer tapered round of prednisone. The prednisone ended 3 days ago and we have just a couple of days of antibiotic left and already we are seeing chunks of hair falling out. The only other factor we see is that her chip drifted a bit and is at the very outside of the bald spot. We are looking for ANY information that could help us solve this. Our vet is really working on this too, but any yorkie specific info would help.

    • I have 2 yorkies, male 4 and female 2. My male had the same problem. I finally figured out he had a food allergy. I now have to cook everything he eats. His hair came back more beautiful than ever.

  3. I have a 4 month ol led Yorkie and about 4 months ago I noticed a small bald spot on her right shoulder and since then the spot has gotten bigger. She has been eating the same dry food since we brought her home at 8 weeks. She doesn’t notice the spot and it isn’t irritated. Took her to the vet and they were puzzled and want to just watch it. I’m afraid she will be completely bald in the next month! month

Keep up with the follow- up visits at the veterinarian.

There are also numerous skin and coat supplements that promote skin and coat health in dogs. Omega-3s are beneficial for skin and coat health in dogs. These are important fatty acids that all dogs need. Look for the “ingredient panel” in supplements, which should show the measured list of vitamins and nutrients. Whole food supplements work well, and allow for the dog’s body to use what it needs, and get rid of what it does not need. There are also numerous products on the market for “hot spots.”

For natural “hot spot” relief, see my article about Rooibos tea:https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/rooibos-tea-a-healing-brew-for-you-and-your-dog/

  4. Did u try diet? Antibiotics & steroids – ur messing with her natural defenses. Try ACV & a hi-quality coconut oil.

Please consult with your veterinarian if your Yorkie is having skin sensitivities. Your veterinarian will need to make a precise diagnosis of the causes. You will also need to give your vet your dog’s detailed history. Your Yorkie will also need to have a complete examination, and the right diagnostic tests. There are numerous skin diseases that look similar, and an immediate diagnosis sometimes is not possible. That said, a few visits will be required for a correct diagnosis. Your vet may also recommend a grain-free diet.

  5. Very good written article. It will be helpful to everyone who usess it, including yours

  6. Hello….my yorkie is 7 years old and suddenly developed hard crusty bumps on her back. Vet put her on prednisone & antihistamine and it helped….BUT now her hair has turned silver in round patches where bumps were. No hair loss though. Just looks like silver round spots all over her. It’s crazy! What could this be?

These will have awesome results, and remove excess skin and oils, dirt, and flea eggs from your dog’s coat. These baths help treat seborrhea, and are also important in preventative care.

  7. I Have a Question, Have you ever Heard of Spelling in the puppies gens. My Male Parti Yorkie puppy was born with no under coat. Top of his head was bald and so was his chest. My vet called it Spelling and said both my parents should be tested. What is it that I am testing for? Nobody I no has heard of this, puppy was healthy just didn’t grow hair head and chest.

I only answer the comments section.Yorkies have no undercoat. They are single-coated dogs that have long silky hair. That said, it’s not impossible for some to have a double -coat, though this is penalized by the UKC. The Yorkie has hair similar to human hair that continues to grow. The coat needs to be regularly trimmed. The Yorkie also does shed, but not as visibly as other dog breeds. Because the Yorkie lacks an undercoat, you will need to keep him or her warm during the cold winter months. Get your Yorkie pup used to wearing a sweater during puppyhood during the winter months. Yorkies also have less dander, and are a fantastic match for dog lovers that suffer from allergies. Check your pup out for sensitivities that may link to baldness. Alopecia in dogs needs to be addressed by a veterinarian, so that the underlying cause is found.

Males are most often affected. They will have patchy or pattern hairlessness together with dental anomalies. Yorkies may be affected with a syndrome called color dilution alopecia. This is linked to a gene that turns normal black hair blue, beige, or fawn colored. These dogs that are affected are born with normal coats, but begin to develop hair follicle inflammation and progressive hair loss within the first year. The hair loss will occur in the blue or fawn-colored areas.

Consult with your veterinarian for advice and a complete check-up to eliminate other causes of hair loss. If your terrier has itching, a foul body odor, infected skin or itchy skin, other skin lesions and even changes in behavior you will need to see a veterinarian. Insect bites, too strong a shampoo, and even certain medications can also cause bald spots in dogs.

The Yorkie being so popular with their soft, smooth and silky coat! A fun breed to groom. Dog grooming products are trending and spiking an interest with so much Yorkie pampering going on today. The first rule in Yorkie grooming is having good grooming supplies around with natural conditioners and shampoos, that contain formulas free of dyes, sulphates and parabens. Consult with your veterinarian if your Yorkie is suffering from hot spots and skin sensitivities or allergies. Keep visiting out website!

  9. Useful read and I agree with all the information. For the inexperienced Yorkie owners I would suggest as written in the article to use only quality shampoo and conditioner.
Also brushing daily, no matter the hair is long or short is also the best way to keep it in perfect shape.
If you see some change in the usual shape of the hair the best thing is to consult with a vet as soon as you observe it.

This dog breed makes for fun grooming. If keeping with a medium length coat, it’s necessary to groom your Yorkie every day to prevent matting. The Shed-It, by Connair Pro Dog’s new, 4 in 1 is a de-shedding and grooming tool that helps with excess shedding and prevents matting. As mentioned, using a high-quality dog shampoo and conditioner is key to a great Yorkie coat. There are also numerous hypoallergenic, detangling and hydrating conditioners and shampoos for dogs. By opting to use natural products with no parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances or sulphates, you’ll be helping your Yorkie stay healthy. As usual, always consult with your veterinarian if there are any changes in your Yorkies coat.

Also for those of you wondering if the short or long cut is better, well there is no right answer.
I have spoken with many vets and they all said that they do nor recommend too short trim because the hair protects the body during hot and cold seasons.
On the other way long trim is more difficult to maintain. So I guess the best decision is somewhere in between.

For those Yorkie dog parents that opt for professional grooming, maintaining a medium length cut works best for the Yorkie as a breed. Too short a clip leaves the Yorkie looking “sickly.” “Sanitary” clips for Yorkie pups make it extremely easy for pet parents to maintain hygiene and “good looks” at the same time. Daily brushing works best, and should begin during puppyhood. That said, keeping your Yorkie indoors during the hot summer months and cold winters has to be top priority. When traveling with your pooch during the cold winter months, opt for comfortable canine fashion lines that ensure warmth, safety, and comfort.

  12. I have three Yorkies, Mom, Dad and Son. I know that nearing two to three years of age the yorkies seem to start shedding and regrowing in hair at the same time. When the new hair grows in its silver or blue and the other hair markings are turning blonde or tan. What a beautiful coat these smart loving dogs have once they get through the first two years. Well worth the wait. Remi also starting shedding and losing hair after he was fixed. Guess it was a bit tramatic to have his manhood taken away, šŸ™ so sad. It has really calmed him down and he has become a wonderful lap fellow. Love this breed.

The Yorkie is a favorite dog breed. It is one of the most beautiful dog breeds with a wonderful coat. That said, the coat color does change. All Yorkie pups are born with a black and tan coat color. Coat color changes within the first two years. The black and tan color will change to a steel- blue color, which is the breed standard. The coat will begin to change at around 6 months of age. It will soften and become silky. It continues to change for the next two to three years. It can either be a dark steel-blue or a light silvery-blue color. Adult Yorkies will have a more gold and tan coloring, and an older Yorkie will be much lighter in color than a pup Yorkie. A Yorkie should have more tan/gold and black/blue markings on the head and leg areas. This coloring needs to be distinct. The coat needs to be silky and shiny. It should also be long and straight.

  13. I have a Yorkie with pretty short hair but each time I put a coat on him the hair get really tangled and matted He gets really cold so he definitely needs a coat. I tried different material costs but they all get the hair all matted. Anything I can do to help to prevent the hair getting matted. I just a dog shampoo and brush regularly. I saw these deranged sprays. Do you recommend them ??
    Please help

I only answer the comments section. There are numerous body splash sprays for dogs that refresh, deodorize and detangle all-in-one for multiple use. These work wonderfully to prevent hair from matting. They are also gentle enough to use every day.Using a high-quality brush that is “human-grade” gives dog owners the ability to penetrate the depth of the coat, and separate the strands as the brush passes through. This helps to prevent matting. Brushes like the Activet help to untangle mats quickly. Hope this helps!

  14. My Yorkie is 11 years old . Her hair is thin down the middle of her
back. The skin has black & white
    spots. She had Pancreatics about
three months ago, lost quite a bit
of weight. She has not gained her
weight back however she eats good & acts normal . What do we
need to do about her hair?

    • Hi Shirley,

Please consult with your veterinarian for supplements, and advice as to a specialized diet. As usual a diet that is high-quality and highly- digestible is preferred. Foods made from the best ingredients are good options. Fresh water should always be available. Consult with your veterinarian as to the best post-pancreatic dog food diet. There are also great organic shampoos to help with coat and skin health. Hope this helps!

Your best bet would be to visit your veterinarian, and to have a full health-check. Your vet will be able to advise as to allergens, parasites, and possible food allergies. Anti-itch medications are available from your veterinarian, as well as medicated bathing, to get rid of the itch and redness. Your veterinarian will advise you on which dog foods are best for small breeds with allergies, if the allergy is related to diet.

  17. What are my options for flea and tick control since my Yorkie is so small. Do natural solutions work as well as normal ones?

The Companion Animal Parasite Council(CAPC) states that there have been increases in parasite-transmitted diseases like Lyme disease. As a Yorkie parent today, it’s important to take this into account. Veterinarians today are advising pet parents to use year-round flea and tick treatments. Your question is a good one! Being aware of the exposure to certain chemicals within flea and tick products should be a priority.Pet parents should consult with their veterinarians for the best advice about which flea and tick products to use on their dogs.

Today there are numerous natural products that are as effective. There are some waterproof spray- on formulas that stay on for as long as 17 days. They offer an alternative to spot-on and collar products for pets. Dog parents should look for enhanced repellency for ticks, fleas, gnats, mosquitos and flies. There are also natural food additives that offer protection for flea control that come in the form of a supplement.

Nutritional yeast keeps flies and ticks away. It is also a source of vitamin B. Pet parents can also use kelp which has plenty of minerals.Eco-safe flea and tick formulas work effectively in keeping your dog free from fleas and ticks.
