The Top 10 Best Puppy Shampoo Products

The Top 10 Best Puppy Shampoo Products

Bathing adult dogs can be a bit of an undertaking, especially if they’re big and don’t like bathtime. Luckily, there are some breeds that you don’t have to bathe all that often. In fact, some only need shampoos when they’re visibly dirty.

Puppies, though, are a different story, primarily because they are so much more likely to get messy. Between exploring the world around them and figuring out housetraining, puppies are prone to getting dirty, which means you may need to bathe and shampoo your young pet more often than you would an adult dog. This is especially true if your pup spends a lot of time outside.

To get your little dog clean, you have to lather them up with the best puppy shampoo. Some pet owners think using regular shampoo on a dog is fine, but that’s not really true, especially when it comes to puppies. Human shampoo has higher acidity than the best puppy shampoos and may irritate your puppy’s sensitive skin. Let’s take a closer look at the art of dog bathing and pet care, and the best shampoo for the job

How Often Should You Bathe a Puppy?

If your little dog mostly stays inside, you only need to shampoo it once a month, unless it has sensitive skin, in which case you can wait a little longer. If your pet gets messy from playing outside or having an accident while house training, they’ll need to be bathed more often.

Bathing a dog is not complicated, but there are some helpful tips and tricks that make the process go a little more smoothly. Here are a few things to keep in mind while you’re getting ready to bathe your best puppy to make sure you both have the best experience.

1. Fill up the tub.

The bigger your dog, the bigger the tub you’ll need. Some people prefer to bathe their dog in the bathtub while others like to set up a tub outside and use the garden hose to fill it. Whichever method you choose, make sure the water is warm enough. If you go the outdoor route, you may need to add some warm water from the kitchen sink to the tub to get the temperature up, especially if it’s during the spring or fall.

If you have a large puppy that tries to climb out of the bathtub and makes a mess, it might be better to do baths outside when you can. Just keep in mind that you may have to eventually use your bathtub when the outside temperature gets too cold.

Temperature is an important factor when bathing any dog, but especially a puppy. If the water is too cold, they will shiver and may be more prone to getting sick; too hot, and the water can scald or irritate their delicate skin. Test the water first to be sure it’s comfortable and make sure it’s a nice, warm day if you plan to bathe them outside.

2. Get what you need to stay comfortable.

Get what you need to stay comfortable

This might not seem very important, but if you stand hunched over bathing your puppy for an extended period, you’re going to end up with some serious back pain. Get yourself a rubber mat or thick towel to kneel on or a stool or bench to sit on and make sure you have all of your supplies handy.

It also helps to have an extra set of hands in case the dog tries to escape or you forgot something you need. This is a great way to get younger children involved in helping to take care of a new puppy, too.

You have to make sure your puppy is comfy, too. Talk to them and give them lots of pats throughout the process to keep them calm, and have a treat ready for the end of the bath.

3. Take your time.

Bathing your puppy shouldn’t be a race to the finish. Take your time and make sure you do a thorough job. Start by gathering puppy shampoo, a towel, and all of the other necessary supplies. It’s always best to be gentle when washing their face, ears, and tummy. Work up a good lather to get their fur and skin nice and clean, and be sure to take the time to rinse it thoroughly. Do your best to keep the soap away from their eyes and ears and give them a break from lathering and rinsing if they need it.

Can I Use Baby Shampoo on My Puppy?

You can, but it’s not the best choice for your pet’s skin and fur and should only be used when you don’t have any other option. Unlike regular shampoos, baby shampoo won’t alter the pH balance of your puppy’s skin. But if your puppy has sensitive skin, you should stick with one of the best puppy shampoos available.

That said, if your puppy is a mess from playing in the mud or getting into the garbage and you only have baby shampoo, you can certainly use it. At that point, it’s best to get your dog clean, so a gentle natural shampoo is a great alternative for your dog’s coat. If you have a puppy, though, it’s a good idea to always have some puppy specific shampoo for dogs on hand. You never know when you’ll need it.

What Shampoos Do You Use for Puppies?

Dog shampoo is the best choice for dogs and puppies because it’s specially formulated to maintain your pet’s skin and coat. The best puppy shampoos are made using natural ingredients and they don’t have any harsh chemicals that could dry your dog’s skin.

Another special thing about dog shampoos and puppy shampoos is that it’s formulated to lather quickly, penetrating through the fur to the skin quickly so bathtime is as efficient as possible. If you’re looking for the best puppy shampoo for your pet, here are five of our favorite puppy shampoos.

1. CHI Tearless Puppy Shampoo

CHI Tearless puppy shampoo is an amazing product that’s worth every penny. It’s pH balanced for all fur and skin types and contains no sulfates or parabens, and because it’s tearless, you don’t have to worry as much about getting it in your puppy’s eyes.

This best puppy shampoo contains natural ingredients like aloe vera, honey, and chamomile essential oils to gently cleanse and moisturize your puppy’s coat and skin. You only need a small amount, so this 16-ounce bottle should last a while. To use, apply from the back of the ears to the tail, avoiding the eyes are much as possible. You can do up to two shampoos within 24 hours if needed without worrying about drying out your pet’s skin.

3. Honeydew Natural Dog Shampoo with Colloidal Oatmeal

A single bottle of this puppy shampoo lasts a long time because you don’t need to use much, and it leaves behind a clean, baby powder smell that lasts for days.

5. Oster Oatmeal Essentials Shampoos

Another great natural oatmeal-based shampoo is this puppy shampoo from Oster. It’s specially formulated for puppies eight weeks and older and, in addition to 100 percent oatmeal extract, contains other natural products, like wheat protein, rosemary extract, and humectants and contains no parabens, dyes, or alcohols.

It has a long-lasting baby powder scent, so not only does your puppy’s fur and skin feel softer and look amazing, it smells great, too. This product is extremely affordable, and a single bottle should last a pretty long time.

For best results, Oster recommends brushing your pet before bathing to make sure there aren’t any tangles in the fur. Lather the shampoo by hand and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid drying out the skin. Then, dry your dog and brush through the fur again.

For best results, apply to your dog’s coat when it’s wet. Work from the head, down the back to the tail, taking care to avoid the eyes. This puppy shampoo does not lather quite as much as some of the other brands because it’s made using all-natural ingredients and is actually soap free.

This product is recommended by vets and is great for puppies and adult dogs. It’s free of fragrances, dyes, and sulfates and has a mild scent that comes right from its all natural ingredients.

7. Veterinary Formula Solutions Puppy Love Extra Gentle Tearless Shampoo

One of the nice things about this dog’s shampoo is that it won’t wash away any topical tick or flea treatments, which is extremely convenient if you’re dealing with a problem but you need to get your pet clean. It leaves behind a fresh baby-powder scent that lasts for days.

This 17-ounce bottle is budget-friendly and should last a long time. The shampoo is a little on the thin side, but it has a great lather and rinses easily. It’s a good choice for any dog but is one of the best for long-haired puppies.

10. Arava Flea & Tick Control Dog & Puppy Shampoo

Unfortunately, even puppies have to deal with fleas and ticks, especially if they spend a lot of time outside. If you’ve noticed these or any other annoying insects or pests on your pet, this puppy shampoo from Arava is the best choice, no matter how old your dog is.

The great thing about this dog shampoo is that, unlike some other flea and tick formulas, it doesn’t use harsh chemicals. This purely natural botanical formula features a wide range of ingredients, including thyme, clover, peppermint, cinnamon, citronella, rosemary, and lemongrass. It effectively eliminates your pet’s pest problems and leaves their coat and skin clean and refreshing. Best of all, there’s no harsh chemical smell left behind on your pet.

One of the best things about Arava dog shampoos is that they’re so confident that you’ll love this product, they offer a 100 percent 30-day money-back guarantee so there’s no risk to try. Plus, they donate a percentage of their revenue to help non-profit animal rights organizations. Not only are you giving your puppy an amazing shampoo, but you’re also helping other animals get the help they deserve.

The Benefits of Choosing the Best Puppy Shampoo

Using the right type of dog shampoo for your puppy is important because it helps to make sure your puppy’s fur and skin stay soft, moisturized, and healthy. While you don’t have to bathe most pets all that often, there is always the chance that their curiosity will lead them to a messy situation. It’s good to be prepared with the best puppy shampoo waiting and ready to go.

Bathing your dog is not a difficult task, but it’s easier when you’re prepared and have everything you need within arm’s reach. Remember to think about the comfort of both you and your pet and have everything you need ready beforehand. You don’t want to spend a lot of time hunched over while lathering up your dog as you’ll end up with a painful back and shoulders. You also don’t want to get started with the bath with your dog in the tub only to realize that you’re missing something essential, like the best puppy shampoo for your pet.

Best bet would be to try out a grain-free dog food, and to try eliminating certain foods from your dog’s diet to see if the itching stops. Is your dog on a good flea and tick prevention? Switch your flea and tick prevention to another brand. Opt for pill option. (no topical, no collar) Yorkies also tend to have super sensitive skin and coats. That said, she is very young to be having these problems. Opt for super gentle organic dog shampoos and conditioners. If in the past, you’ve been taking her to the groomers for grooming and clipping, I would recommend switching groomers, or asking your current groomer to change products, and to triple rinse her coat. Rinsing with a lukewarm Rooibos tea helps with itching and hot spots. It is a South African tea that helps with everything! You can get this tea from most health stores. Make sure it is not hot, but lukewarm or near cold. Hope this helps. As usual, consult with your veterinarian for the very best advice! Keep in touch!

All-natural shampoos are good options, especially since many of them contain vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals that help to condition and nourish a pup’s skin and coat. Formulas should be biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and tearless for facial cleaning. There are numerous puppy and dog shampoos that contain natural oils, which adhere to the surface of a dog’s skin. These shampoos don’t dry the skin.

Opt for calming herb ingredients and essential oils that will benefit both a dog’s skin and coat. Keep in mind that mint scents may help to deter fleas, mosquitos and ticks naturally. If you’re strapped for time, opt for dry shampoos that can be sprayed onto the dog’s skin. These remove dirt and funky smells from the coat. Keep in mind that you’ll need to use a hand towel to massage the dry shampoo into the dog’s coat.

Puppy and dog shampoos that contain citronella, eucalyptus and citrus scents also help to keep away bugs like flies, ticks, mosquitos, and fleas. These shampoos contain natural ingredients, and don’t dry out the skin or coat.

Keep in mind that the correct grooming tools and daily grooming are also necessary for a healthy coat. Consult with a veterinarian if your dog has skin or coat issues.

Consulting with your veterinarian is the first step, so that your veterinarian can do a complete physical on her. Your veterinarian will also advise you on the best flea shampoo for pups. Your veterinarian will have to examine her skin and coat, and prescribe medication for the skin irritation. Your puppy will also need to go on a flea preventative, so as to prevent reoccurring flea problems and skin irritations. Secondary skin infections are also a problem stemming from fleas.

This is a skin disease that affects dogs. There is a cornification of the outer layer of the skin. It comes about from a defect in keratinization. First signs are a scaly formation on the skin and hair follicles. You will also notice that your dog has a greasy coat and smelly skin. Sometimes this is accompanied by secondary inflammation and infection. As with any skin infection affecting your dog, it’s necessary to consult with your veterinarian right away. Seborrhea may also indicate other skin diseases like food allergies, airborne allergies, a mite infestation or ringworm.

Primary seborrhea in dogs is inherited. Dog breeds that are affected by primary seborrhea include the following:

      .Cocker Spaniel
      .English Springer Spaniel
      .Basset Hounds
      .West Highland White Terriers
      .German Shepherds
      .West Highland Terriers
      .Dachshunds
      .Labradors
      .Golden Retrievers

Numerous dogs infected with seborrhea will have a family history of this skin disease. Seborrhea can be seen as early as 17 months of age, and is typically prevalent between 18-24 months. This will then continue throughout the affected dog’s life. Thus the need to have continuous veterinary care, so that this skin disease can be managed throughout your dog’s life.

      Secondary Seborrhea

In this case, there is an underlying disease that causes the excessive scaling on a dog’s skin. With this, you also see oiliness, crustiness, and scaling of the skin. There may be an accompanying skin inflammation that has pus, and is infected. Hair loss follows soon afterwards.

Your veterinarian will diagnose and treat the underlying causes. It’s important to advise your veterinarian if your dog has the following:

      .Excessive thirst
      .Excessive urination

If there is a bacterial infection, you’ll notice the following on your dog’s skin:

      .Papules
      .Hair loss
      .Skin oiliness
      .Smelly coat
      .Scaley coat
      .Follicular boils
      .Skin texture is different

Itchy dogs with seborrhea have a really hard time with self-trauma from itching. Infections make the itchiness worse, and there will be a large amount of hair loss and crusting. Skin samples are taken to diagnose if it’s a bacterial or yeast infection. In this case, it’s very important to follow up on all veterinary care as to medications and medical bathing. Never miss a follow-up appointment! Medicated shampoos and antibiotics help to keep seborrhea in check, and also allow for your dog to feel more comfortable and itch-free.

There are numerous skin issues in dogs that in turn will affect a dog’s ears. Bacteria, mites, trauma, abnormal temperatures, food allergies, and cancer also may affect your dog’s ears. With some ear infections affecting the outer ear, veterinarians are able to easily diagnose and treat the ear infection. That said, middle and inner ear infections are more traumatic, more painful, and may take longer to treat. Bad ear odors are the first sign of an ear infection together with head tilting or head shaking.

A veterinary consult is necessary for your veterinarian to make a diagnosis. Ear infections are common in dogs, yet need to be treated immediately, since deafness may result from an infection or degeneration of the cochlea.

Your veterinarian will also check for ear hematomas which are fluid-filled lumps that form on the outer ear. In this case your puppy will scratch his ears and head shake. Ear infections in puppies and dogs may be caused by allergies in the dog’s environment, and from dog food allergies, as well. This condition is very itchy and drainage may be needed.

Flies and parasites can also cause ear bumps or swelling in the ear. Tumors can also affect certain dog breeds more than others like Cocker Spaniels. Veterinary treatment for outer ear infections include flushing the dog’s ear with an ear-cleaning solution. Your veterinarian may prescribe a topical ointment for the ear, and anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal meds.

Senior dogs, and dogs that spend time in the water, are also prone to ear infections. Signs of an ear canal tumor may include bloody, or waxy, pus-filled ear discharge, with a bad odor. Head shaking, scratching are common with this condition, and dogs need to visit their veterinarian asap for treatment. Apart from being extremely painful, your dog could go deaf. Tumors in the earwax gland may be benign or malignant, and tend to affect senior dogs most often.

Signs include loss of balance, pain, head tilting, and pus filled ear wax. With malignant earwax tumors, your veterinarian may recommend surgical removal or laser surgery. That said, it’s always best for pet parents to have pet health insurance at all times to help with veterinary costs, and to know that their puppy or dog will always have great veterinary care, if needed.

Feeding your furry best friend a high-quality puppy food (pups) or dog food formula (adult dogs) may help prevent ear and skin disorders stemming from food allergies. Your veterinarian may test for food allergies, in which a food elimination diet is introduced for 6-8 weeks. Routine ear cleaning and ear canal hair trimming needs to be part of the grooming routine. Veterinarian techs may also help with routine ear cleanings together with medical bathing. That said, at the first signs of an ear infection in your furry best friend, it’s best to visit your veterinarian right away, so that a diagnosis is made, and the correct treatment started.
